How to Choose the Right Yacht for Your Family

Most first-time buyers begin with length. It is the easiest number to compare, and the one brokers are asked about most often. It is also, in our experience, the least useful starting point.

The better question is how your family actually spends time together on water. A household that entertains in port needs a different main-deck layout than one that anchors for a week at a time. Cabin configuration, not overall length, is usually what determines whether a yacht feels right after the first season.

Range matters more than most buyers expect. If your cruising grounds span two or three countries in a season, fuel capacity and cruising speed change which yachts are realistic candidates before price ever enters the conversation.

Finally, consider crew. A larger yacht with a smaller, well-matched crew often feels more private than a mid-size yacht run informally — privacy on board is a function of routine as much as space.
